Description
Zanjan carpet is one of the well-known traditional handwoven rugs of northwestern Iran. It is recognised for its geometric designs, traditional motifs and distinctive craftsmanship. These carpets are mainly woven in the rural areas of Zanjan, reflecting the skills and artistic heritage passed down through generations of local weavers.
Geometric motifs, central medallions with corner designs (Lachak and Toranj), panel patterns (Kheshti), and motifs inspired by nature are among the common designs found in Zanjan carpets.
Wool is the primary material used for the pile, while cotton is commonly used for the warp and weft. Both Turkish (symmetrical) and Persian (asymmetrical) knots can be found in carpets produced across different areas of the province.
Zanjan carpets, with their distinctive regional designs and traditional weaving techniques, represent an important part of Iran’s rich carpet-weaving heritage and are an appealing choice for those who appreciate authentic Iranian handmade rugs.
